The Hunt

November paint out
My husband likes to hunt and fish.  To him, sitting in the woods for hours, cold and wet, hot or dry---it doesn't matter---is  a thrill.  Until I started plein air painting, I couldn't understand the  high.  But now when I'm out in nature, a paint brush or pastel stick in hand, I feel like the hunter zoned in on the prize--the perfect light, dazzling colors and value patterns, the fleeting moment of beauty.   Plein air painting is addictive, and I hope I fill my walls with trophies of success.

election and portrait draw night

Yesterday was election day.  Like most Americans I had a favorite candidate and was feeling the stress of weeks of campaign tension. But every month I facilitate a group of local artists in a portrait draw night--an idea I gleaned from Canadian artist Raynold Murphy. We bring our drawing tools,  take turns  modeling for 20 minute intervals, and give each other a chance to practice our portrait skills for free---the volunteer model then may choose to keep his or her portrait of choice.  Tuesday was our night to meet. I wondered who would show up with election returns coming in and many people perhaps having to stand in line to vote.  We had a good group of 6 faithful artists.  The reward was a relaxing evening doing what we love, enjoying the fellowship and fun of learning from each other.  Stress vanished.  The creative energy was invigorating.   I am thankful for the gift of art, artist friends and the personal connection of working together.

I was going to post my drawings, but my models took them.
